This volume offers an introduction to the concept of «media constellations», which is examined from the vantage point of periodicals — magazines, revues, ephemeral print formats, and journals — from the 18th century until the mid-20th century.
The 11 contributions gathered here therefore take up the question of mediality, that lies at the core of periodical culture. Through as many case studies, they illustrate the ways in which media constellations unfold on the pages of periodicals; as well as in the relations established between magazines and surrounding media such as books, film, and photography. This volume thus positions periodicals as one key entry point into modern media cultures.
Besides proposing their own, situated readings of periodical content, the present essays together uncover some of the dynamics that connect varied periodicals between themselves and with other media. Matters of mobility, translation, re-uses and re-publications, networked production and reception, and text-image relations, are addressed in the process. By engaging with these among other issues across a wide range of print formats and media, we seek in this book to broaden perspectives about what periodicals do and, by repercussion, about how media cultures are shaped and take shape.
This edited volume proceeds from the fourth international conference of the DFG research unit «Journalliteratur» (2288).
